Pipeline Engineer

As a Pipeline engineer you are responsible for managing the Vopak and MultiCore pipelines, so that the company can offer a high quality pipeline network that meets the requirements of our customers and (government) regulations. Work includes supervision and development of pipeline inspection and maintenance plans as well as maintaining contacts with pipeline owners, authorities and contractors. Management of pipeline-related inspection and repair projects will be part of the job. As such you contribute to the reputation of Vopak as a safe, reliable and high-quality organization for all stakeholders.

External pipeline management is responsible for optimization, maintenance, and reliability of the external pipelines of Vopak NL and customers who have outsourced the management of their pipelines to Vopak. As a Pipeline engineer you are part of a team of 3 pipeline engineers that operates within the asset management department E&A.


  • Bachelor's and/or Master's degree in Pipeline Technology or Mechanical Engineering or equivalent

  • Minimal 5-10 years of experience in pipeline management and/or inspection.

  • Knowledge and experience with RBI methods, degradation mechanism,  coatings, corrosion, NDO, DO, etc.

  • Adequate knowledge and application of laws & regulations (such as environmental permits, Bevb, NEN3650, NEN 3655, , EN, ASME, DIN, BS, etc.).

  • Flexibility to work at different locations.

  • Excellent stakeholder management on different levels.

  • Proven Safety leadership and service mindedness.

  • Strong conceptual and analytical skills.

  • Entrepreneurial, energetic personality, self-motivated.

  • Focus on continuous improvement and disciplined execution.

  • Good interpersonal skills and good communicator, able to communicate effectively, both in Dutch and English in all layers of the organization.

Tasks & responsibilities

  • Contribute to the reputation of Vopak as a safe and high-quality organization for all stakeholders.

  • Monitor pipeline compliance to applicable environmental permits, codes and technical standards.

  • Work on best practices, engineering guidelines and internal procedures, and maintain internal and external networks to be informed of new developments in the field of inspection and maintenance.

  • Prepare inspection and maintenance strategies, execution schedules and periodic (progress) reports.

  • Draft annual plans and reports, including cost estimates regarding inspections and maintenance in order to meet the predetermined targets and legal deadlines.

  • Lead (execute) pipeline inspection programs and ensure safe execution of inspection activities for pipelines.

  • Evaluate inspection results, assess fitness for purpose to industry standard and prepare follow up recommendations. For repairs, modifications and changes to existing pipelines provide technical review and approval.

  • Control and monitoring of contractors carrying out maintenance work.

  • Participate in an emergency service (24/7) for external pipelines (emergency plan) and act as the first point of contact for pipeline owners and other stakeholders.

  • Organize HAZOP sessions, ensuring process safety is embedded in the design of our pipelines.

  • Organizing periodic meetings with pipeline owners, (environmental) authorities and other stakeholders (Managing Directors / Terminal Managers). 

  • Attending and participating in various meetings in relation to the management and ownership of a pipeline network. To this end, participate in meetings of the 'Vereniging van Eigenaren van Leidingen in Nederland' (VELIN) and take care of membership.

  • Performance monitoring & troubleshooting of existing pipelines.

  • Lead  projects with the emphasis on pipeline maintenance.

  • Correct interpretation and application of operating permit requirements as well as its obligations and restrictions. 

  • User of the Pipeline Integrity Management System assuring that the right maps and  information are available for decision taking and project control
