Vopak is well underway to become a digital and data driven organization. We are investing heavily in the data foundation as well as speeding up the utilization of data. For years, we have been standardizing our business processes across our terminal network, modernizing our application landscape, started governing and modeling our data, and implemented new cloud based integration-, and data analytics platforms. More and more data is utilized in customer portals, data sharing platforms with partners in the logistic supply chain, and for advanced analytics & AI.
In a brand new department within Global IT, the Data and Analytics Office, all data capabilities needed to support Vopak's data journey are centralized, ranging from Data Engineers & Data Scientists to Data Quality experts and Data Architects.
As a Data Engineer you will be responsible for expanding and optimizing the preparation and delivery of our data towards our data consumers, including collection/ingestion and integration of data from various internal and external data sources, into the different data stores and systems optimized for reporting and analytics. Examples are our cloud-based data lake (AWS S3), enterprise data warehouse (Snowflake) and data virtualization & catalogue (data.world).
Furthermore we are in the process of implementing an ambitious data analytics architecture, where we are translating our business strategy and requirements to new data technologies.
One of your first assignments will be the migration of our current data integration solution into a modernized data integration technology.
We are looking for a (medior) Data Engineer to help us in our journey towards becoming a data driven company.
Preferably 5+ years of experience in a Data Engineer role, who has attained a Graduate degree in Computer Science, Statistics, Informatics, Information Systems or another quantitative field
Advanced working SQL knowledge and experience working with relational databases
Experience with AWS cloud services like S3, Athena and Glue
Experience with data virtualization tools
Experience with relational SQL and NoSQL databases
Experience with data vault
Experience with data pipeline and workflow management tools
Experience with extract, transform, load tools like Matillion, Informatica IICS, AWS Glue Studio
Experience with object-oriented/object function scripting languages like Python
Strong written and verbal communication
Demonstrated strong teamwork, interpersonal and communications skills
Demonstrated intensity in completion of work assignments
Demonstrated strong analytical and problem solving skills

Main activities and responsibilities will be:
You are experienced with leading the data preparation process using different technologies and who enjoys optimizing data systems and building them from the ground up. The Data Engineer will support our Business Intelligence consultants, Data Analysts and Data Scientists on data initiatives and will ensure optimal data delivery architecture is consistent throughout ongoing projects. The Data Engineer works with the Data Architects, Business Intelligence consultants, Data Scientists and Data Warehouse Engineers in order to understand and aid in the implementation of database requirements, analyze performance, and troubleshoot any existent issues. The position of the data engineer also plays a key role in the development and deployment of innovative big data platforms for advanced analytics and data processing.
Participate in proof of concepts for determining fit for purpose solutions
Work with a variety of databases
Build and optimize ‘big data' data pipelines, architectures and data sets
Perform root cause analysis on internal and external data and processes to answer specific business questions and identify opportunities for improvement
Work with unstructured datasets
Build processes supporting data transformation, data structures, metadata, dependency and workload management
Manipulate, process and extract value from large disconnected datasets
Setup message queuing, stream processing, and highly scalable ‘big data' data stores
Work with cross-functional teams in a dynamic environment
Perform thorough testing and validation in order to support the accuracy of data transformations and data verification used in machine learning models
Enable and run data migrations across different databases and different servers
Analyze complex data elements and systems, data flow, dependencies, and relationships in order to contribute to conceptual physical and logical data models
Develop and implement scripts for database maintenance, monitoring, and performance tuning to be applied across the business
